Greece! Britt's Birthday and Farewell to Greece!

Our last full day in Santorini happened to be Miss Britt's birthday. We went to Fira for a fancy dinner that night. Much as we both loved the Greek food we had, we were both craving something that tasted a little more like home, so we found a place that served fajitas and hamburger steaks. They gave us a great table that looked out at the sunset over the ocean and even brought Britt a special birthday dessert.

Happy birthday to Britt!

After dinner, we took some time to call our parents before catching the bus back to Perissa. We used a phone booth by the dermatologist's office.

Funny story about that...

I had stopped by earlier so he could check up on my rash. He looked at it, asked me a few questions, and then somberly declared "It is finished. It is done." But before I actually got in to see him, I went to use the bathroom. And... locked myself in. There was no handle on the inside of the door of the bathroom and Britt had gone to call someone so she wasn't in the lobby. I tried everything I could think of to get out of there and preserve some dignity, but eventually I just had to knock on the inside of the door until one of the nice patients in the waiting room came to ask me if I was alright. She was kind enough to open the door for me. Ah, dignity.

That window up there is the window to the bathroom. Precious memories.

The next day, before we went to catch our ferry, we got up early and went to visit a little village called Pyrgos. This was more like the little villages that we saw in Ios and Naxos, so I liked it quite a lot. Plus, it was nice and quiet because it was still early. We found a little spot to sit where we could see the whole island. Lovely, quiet-- a perfect place to visit on our last day.

So that was our real final day in Greece. After that, we went down to the port and waited a million years for our ferry. Our ride back to Athens took about five and a half hours-- and that was the fast boat. The slow boat would have taken us about nine hours. We got into Athens way past my bedtime and found a taxi driver to take us to our hotel. The whole way there, he talked about the English words that were really Greek words. Do you remember that dad from My Big Fat Greek Wedding? Yeah, that's this guy.

Did you know that "alphabet" came from the first two letters of the Greek alphabet? Alpha and beta. It seems obvious now, but it wowed me at 12: 30 in the morning when he told us this.

Our last hotel was actually our fanciest one, but we hardly got to enjoy it. We only got a few hours of sleep before we had to get up to catch our plane home. We stopped off at Paris again. I saw the Eiffel Tower from the plane and I ate a croissant in the airport, so... I've practically been to France, right? Okay, maybe not. But maybe next time.

Because you'd better believe there will be a next time.
