in the kitchen: sloppy joes

i decided that the picture post counted as news day.  (IT'S IMPORTANT. IT COUNTS.)  so, moving on to wednesday in the kitchen.  today's recipe: sloppy joes.  i made these for myself on my birthday because there are few foods i love more than sloppy joes.

Omnom Sloppy Joes (very slightly adapted from my sister Heather's recipe)

  • 8 ounces lean ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • ½ of a 14 ½-ounce can diced tomatoes (drained or undrained, your preference)
  • 1 8-ounce can tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oat bran (i used wheat bran)
  • 1 ½ tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 ½ tablespoons molasses
  • 1 ½ teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 ½ teaspoons chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ teaspoons raw (turbinado) sugar
  • Dash ground cayenne pepper
  • Onion powder and Garlic powder to taste

Directions
in a large skillet cook meat, onion, and garlic till meat is brown. drain off fat. stir in the tomatoes, tomato sauce, bran, vinegar, molasses, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, sugar, and cayenne pepper. bring to boiling and reduce heat. taste and adjust seasonings. (it tasted quite sweet to me, but that faded as it simmered. i needed a few dashes of onion powder and garlic powder and a bit more salt.) cover and simmer for 5 minutes. uncover and simmer for a few minutes more if needed, or until the mixture is the desired consistency. to serve, spoon meat mixture onto hamburger buns.
