retro movie flashback: the mummy (1999)

title: the mummy
year: 1997
rating: ★★★1/2

summary: mild-mannered English librarian evelyn carnahan joins with her rakish brother jonathan and a (delicious) american adventurer rick o'connell to find the lost egyptian city of hamunaptra. they, along with another group of american explorers, unwittingly resurrect a three-thousand-year-old mummy who wreaks vengance on all of egypt. (or at least the part of egypt where our adventurers are.)

review: it's kind of weird to consider 1999 retro. maybe it isn't specifically retro, but it was eleven years ago. does that count? anyway, i was crazy about this movie when it came out. crazy. i saw this movie in the theater more times than titanic, even, if you can believe it. my friend jamie d. was also crazy about it and we would go watch it at the fairgrounds square mall and squeal together.

sometimes, the movies you loved in the past fade considerably with time; however, the mummy still remains completely awesome and squee-inducing to me. i think what helps this movie age well is that it doesn't take itself too seriously. sometimes a movie with epic special effects starts to look cheesy as technology gets better. such is the case with this movie. however, because the movie doesn't try to be all seriousness all the time (slapstick mummy fights!), the cheesiness blends right in. eleven years later, this movie is still fun, still funny, still awesome. (the fact that brendan fraser is an unbelievable dreamboat is an added bonus as well.)

still love this movie.
